Layer lines, surfaces and finishing

18 September 2026

Layers are part of the look An FDM print is built layer by layer. Layers are visible, especially on angled faces. We design for it: ribs, rhythm and direction can turn layers into a deliberate texture rather than a flaw.

Layer height A low layer height gives a finer surface and a longer print. A high layer height is faster and cheaper but coarser. We usually pick a middle ground and tune it to how visible the part is.

Sanding Sanding softens edges and mattes the surface. It is handwork and costs time — expect it to move the price noticeably on larger surfaces.

Painting Painting needs primer, several coats and drying time. It gives an even look but removes the raw 3D-printed character. Choose it when the part must match something specific.

What we recommend For organisation and functional items: standard as printed. For gifts and display pieces: light sanding on visible edges. For multi-colour corporate items: painting by agreement.
