PLA or PETG — which should you choose?

18 September 2026

In short PLA is stiff, detailed and easy to print cleanly. PETG is tougher, handles moisture better and does not become brittle as quickly.

Heat PLA typically softens around 55–60 °C. A car in the sun, a summer windowsill or a spot near a radiator are poor locations. PETG handles a little more, but neither is a heat-resistant material in the technical sense.

Impact and bending PLA snaps rather than bends. PETG gives a little before it fails and is the better choice for holders, clips and items handled daily.

Appearance PLA gives crisp detail and many colours. PETG has a slightly glossy surface and more visible layers — which many people like about 3D printing.

Environment PLA is made from plant-based feedstock, but that is not the same as compostable in your garden. Industrial composting requires controlled facilities that most people cannot access. We do not claim our prints break down in nature.

Our recommendation Indoor decor and gifts: PLA. Items that are used, handled or live in kitchens and bathrooms: PETG. If the part must be stiff and functional, we look at PETG-CF.
